Abstract
This study was conducted to determine genetic similarity at the molecular level of zoysiagrasses native to the Korean Peninsula. Sixty eight zoysiagrass lines collected from the southwest coastal regions of Korea were evaluated by RAPD analysis. Seventeen polymorphic bands were obtained by PCR analysis with five random primers. Based on the presence of bands, collected zoysiagrasses were classified into 4 major groups by cluster analysis and were subdivided into eight groups according to growth characteristics. Group I included Z. macrostachya which was characterized by wide seed width (1.4 §®). Group II included Z. sinica and natural hybrids exhibiting Z. sinica characteristics like narrow and long seed shape. It showed the highest ratio (5.4) of seed length (SL) to seed width (SW) among the classified groups. Group III included Z. japonica, which had hairy leaves with wide width (5.2 §®), and natural hybrids exhibiting Z. japonica characteristics. Z. matrella, Z. tenuifolia and their variants showing natural hybrid characteristics were included in Group IV. A distinction between Z. sinica and Z. macrostachya was very difficult with morphological characteristics, but was successfully made by RAPD analysis. Most of the collected zoysiagrasses which showed mutual characteristics had banding patterns similar to Z. japonica or Z. sinica, indicating the existence of abundant their natural hybrids in zoysiagrass.
